This book traces the Order of St John through one of the most turbulent periods in its history. Driven from its stronghold, the Order was forced to confront fundamental questions of identity, legitimacy, and purpose before securing a precarious foothold in Malta and re-emerging as a significant power in the western Mediterranean. Rather than simply recounting events, the narrative places them within the wider geopolitical and ideological currents that shaped the sixteenth century. The drama of sieges, voyages, and military campaigns is vividly brought to life, but equal emphasis is given to the human experience behind them: stories of suffering and courage, as well as the brutalities and atrocities perpetrated by both sides.
