Joseph Bezzina’s “A History of the Church in Gozo” presents an extensive account of the island’s Christian legacy, tracing its development from prehistoric and Classical shrines through the Byzantine and medieval periods to modern times. The book includes concise biographies of the nine bishops who have served since the creation of the diocese in 1864, detailed information about Gozo’s fifteen parishes, and documentation of numerous religious events that have rarely been recorded elsewhere.

Organized into 22 chapters over 264 pages, the volume features a comprehensive 1,000-word index, an extensive bibliography, and a multidisciplinary approach that weaves together archaeological discoveries, historical sources, liturgical traditions, architecture, and local customs. The result is a meticulously researched and accessible work—widely regarded as one of the most thorough and authoritative accounts of Gozo’s ecclesiastical history.
